Prompt Sheets & Writing Groups

As I write this, the social isolation restrictions have only been in place for a short time but already several people have contacted me saying how much they miss their writing groups. Me, too 😦  We are emailing and phoning to try and keep in touch and I’ve continued to email our ‘lesson/homework’ sheets out so we stay inspired.

Some years ago I offered weekly lesson sheets/prompts in exchange for unused stamps (to help with the postage costs each month for the magazine) and many people enjoyed them. If anyone missing their writing group inspiration would like me to start this again, I can offer a weekly sheet via email or snail-mailed with ideas and exercises – one postage stamp ($1.10) per sheet or the equivalent (direct deposit etc).

Despite having much more time to write now, often we need that extra encouragement or incentive so please contact me if you would like to be a part of this. Email – positivewordsmagazine@live.com.au or snail mail – Sandra James, PO Box 798, Heathcote 3523 Victoria.

I look forward to lots of entries in the October mini-competition. The word is BUILDING (see details under competitions at the top of the page) and need to be posted by 31 October.

Back to the Beginning…

The October 2017 issue of Positive Words magazine completes 15 years of publication 🙂

I really had no idea how far it would go way back in 2002 when I first decided it was time to ‘have a go’. Since then 100s of writers from all over Australia and  few from overseas have been published; established writers, beginners, young writers, not-so-young writers and a wide range of themes, topics and styles. Many have enjoyed success in Positive Words and other literary competitions and quite a few have published novels or anthologies.

Thank you everyone for all the support – I do appreciate it and hope to continue as long as possible. Positive Words is a labour-of-love; I do not receive any wages or compensation and it is often difficult to cover the postage and printing costs, especially now that on-line publishing has become so popular. Fortunately, there are a number of people who share the load, sending a few extra stamps or dollars with submissions or subscriptions and it really does help! Thank you 🙂

A few people have asked about the very first issue and I still have a few copies available (I was a bit too enthusiastic with my first print run!). Although I suspect it won’t become a valuable collectors item in the near future, if anyone would like a copy please send $3 in unused stamps to The Editor, Sandra James, Positive Words magazine, PO Box 798, Heathcote Victoria 3523.

If you would like a more recent back copy for great reading or to see if you think your work would fit with the magazine, again send $3 in unused stamps (or $5 for two). The cover price is regularly $6 per issue (incudes postage), a six-month subscription $35 and twelve months $60.

For submission or subscription details see above under ‘information’ or email me – positivewordsmagazine@live.com.au

MAY Mini-competition Results

Once again, sincere thanks to all who entered this month’s mini-competition. All entries really do help to keep Positive Words magazine in print, providing publication opportunities for all 🙂

A great range of stories and poems this month featuring the word MUMMY. Goosebumps, tears and laughter…I enjoyed reading every one!

I divided the prize between two entries, one from Gwendoline Hynes, the other from Maryane Falk – Congratulations!

The word for AUGUST is BASKET. Entries need to be posted (snail mail) with the entry fee ($2 in unused stamps) to The Editor, Sandra James, PO Box 798, Heathcote 3523 Victoria by 31 August. (Don’t worry if they don’t arrive by that date…the mail is sooooo slow these days and as long as your entry is posted by the end of the month it will be included.

Thanks 🙂

Shame and inspiration

I pot plants (succulents, geraniums etc) and sell them to help raise funds when there’s a shortfall in subs to cover printing and postage costs for Positive Words and earlier this week delivered 20 to a sweet lady in her 80s who had just dug yet another garden bed in her yard (she has quite a few!) and needed plants to fill it. I’ll call you again soon, she told me, I’m sure I’ll be making more.

I’d been feeling a bit tired and overwhelmed after a busy weekend and she put me to shame! I certainly hope I’m up to digging new garden beds when I’m in my 80s 🙂

I came home singing High Hopes (Oops, there goes another rubber tree…) and if I feel a bit tired in future I’ll remind myself of that lady planting all her plants 🙂

What an inspiration!

Has anyone inspired you lately?
